Certainly Linux is a great OS and I think for students or serious hobbyists or real professionals it is the OS of choice. But, as you say, there are tons of documentation pages and you actually have to READ it to get anywhere. NT or XP server is more of a "just get going" solution that will do most of what we need with little or no reading of manuals. The updates can be (are for XP) pretty automatic. And configuring it is simple. On screen help for everything. Just a few dialog boxes. No cryptic command line options. I've also been watching my dShield reports today and I think I may have been a bit biased in my reporting of ports... I do see a LOT of 137/139 action. And the firewall doesn't stop the zombie web server attacks... checking the logs for that is truly scary... I get way more traffic from those than from everything else combined. Ok so I guess Windows boxes do get hacked more often. So why have I been so lucky? Could you guys please all go attack www.piclist.com and tell me what I've left open? --- James Newton: PICList.com webmaster, former Admin #3 mailto:jamesnewton@piclist.com 1-619-652-0593 phone http://www.piclist.com/member/JMN-EFP-786 PIC/PICList FAQ: http://www.piclist.com -- http://www.piclist.com hint: To leave the PICList mailto:piclist-unsubscribe-request@mitvma.mit.edu
