I think that they are the quietest flying birds in the world. I can assure you that you can't hear a normal sized owl fly until it is 2 meters from you, and even that requires that it flap its wings, else you won't know it's there. This is because an owl's feathers are a very special kind of down adapted for quiet flying (no high speed vortexes) and to not reflect any sounds from the environment.
