With the ability to read & write to program memory and manipulate the
stack the 18F is powerful enough to support the GDB protocol.

I shall carry on working on it and see how it goes. Will post results to
this list.

More exactly a debugger that runs on at least a dozen cpus including
some high power and some low power, inside them (ex. linux, bsd), or
outside (choose host platform and use serial cable + stubs on target).
The PIC is probably too small to support it properly (maybe 18F can).
