I think the cheapest way, and the easiest to
implement in PIC software would be a 1 bit system
into a low pass filter. What you mentioned is an
ideal target application for this system.

My "Picsound" BTc encoder has a 1bit and 1.5bit
system and the dos version is available here:

I have a Windows version of the encoder finished,
and can email it to you but it won't go up on my
page until the help file is properly finished. :o)
