I know about the errata concerning faulty counting.

However, I am seeing another effect which is that occasionally TMR1L is down
by 0x40, 0x80, or 0xC0.

T1CKI is slow (10 Hz), 50% duty cycle, clean. I'm counting for a minute, and
expect to see 6000.

I'm going to try reading until I get two identical readings, and soak
overnight, but
a) as a workaround, this makes the errata effect more probable, and
b) if the problem is in the counter not the reading thereof, the data will
still be duff. However, by the morning I will know which it is.

I did wonder if the compiler (or I) [CCS PCM] was resetting the bits,
possibly due to getting paging wrong. The value I read goes into a static
variable, not (consciously) overlaid with anything else though.

Any thoughts?
