You can't universally say that. While most PCs (and all I've seen today) have the distinction I HAVE seen some really old ones that did weird stuff like this. Aside from this have you ever dealt with Sun's? I know for a fact that the Ultra30s have 25 pin female serial AND parallel ports, NOTHING stops you from plugging something in to the wrong port.
