If you want to chose one PIC for standardized instruction the 18F452 is it.
The 18 series are the new architecture, and are easier to learn and program
than the old.  They are also more like "real" computers than the 16 series.
The '452 is the current top of the line of the readily available parts.  The
18F452 is the 16F877 brought into the 18 series.
