I tried to send this earlier but I think I blew it. I have used PIN diode photodetectors (with the lid off) as alpha detectors. I think they were EGG 10mm sq quad detedector (just cause I had them). Hooked them up to a transimpedence amplifier with ~ 1 megohm feedback i think. Of course it only works in the dark. Mine seemd to be blind to beta and gamma radiation.
