To make use of the Elektor board I'd go for the 628 as it is pin=

compatible with the 84 plus has the comparators and hardware=
 USART.

Personally I'd use one of the 876/7 for prototyping and then go=
 down
to whatever PIC is needed from that code. I have a feeling the=
 new 18
series might be the way to go, I'm just about to start=
 investigating
them.
