I was thinking of a command line engine written in whatever (probably C optimized by a guru) with a Tcl front end. Or Python if you want. The portability and tweakability of Tcl is very large. I don't know about Python on Macs, it probably runs there too. I am also nervous about languages where whitespace is significant ;-).
