The problem with grounding directly, is if something goes wrong and changes them to outputs at the oppostie polarity. The cheapest is to set them as outputs, but again, if something goes wrong and sets them as inputs, then they float and "may" cause problems. The best (??) is to set them as low outputs with pull down resistors, or high with pullups. If something goes wrong, only a slight increase in power consumption occurs.
