Ding, ding, ding!  We have a winner!

Just tarred one of the recovered subdirs to a .tar file and
unzipped under Win2k and it worked!  Just need to do it for
the rest.  Okay, it's manual, and not as classy as some other
solution, but it'll get the job done.
