In the USA there is no federal sales tax. Each state sets its own sales tax rates and policies. I'm in Massachusetts where sales tax is 5% with food and clothing exempt from all tax. Businesses only have to collect sales tax for the state in which they are located and only from residents of that state. So, when I order from Digi-Key (Minnesota) they do not charge any sales tax. However Massachusetts law says I'm supposed to tell the state about the purchase and send 5% to the state, guess how often people do that :-).
