mostly practice on a bunch of scrap boards to start.. cleaning is done with the tool(reamer) that looks like a small drill bit -- may have a slight taper to it... clean with wet sponge just like regular iron -- minimize "on" time since just a little tip erosion makes the unit useless... sometime helps to put extra solder on each joint (with normal iron) before applying the desoldering tip -- that way the tip has molten solder to "seal" the nozzle and "suck" better for pins that are connected to the gnd/voltage plane it sometimes easier to solderwick the top and bottom side and then break what's left of the solder joint by "wiggling" the component pin with a small needle nose plier or pointed scribe... someone might have a video tape (i've seen some, but they all were pretty expensive) -----Original Message----- From: SM Ling To: PICLIST@MITVMA.MIT.EDU Sent: 8/22/02 6:58 PM Subject: [EE]: Asking for Desoldering gun tips Ffnally I have to admit I don't really know how to use a vacuum desoldering gun properly, but web-searches pop out all kind of product information, nothing instructive. Any URL to recommend? I would want to know what kind of care to give to the desoldering tip. Do I need to tin them? I tried but solder does not stick. And if I don't tin, the heat does not seem to flow to the pin well. And how to desolder on pin that has a huge-heat sink, like those soldered to the big ground plane (please assume I cannot cut off the component) ? Thanks in advance.
