Telecom are just introducing their mobile "Jetstream" data service (no
relationship to Telecom's ADSL product).

RATES:

Monthly fee $NZ / Free MB per month / Chg in NZ cents per 10 kB packet
If voice is charged at these rates as well (as I imagine it is) it could get
rather expensive at casual rates.

For occasional telemetry $NZ0.08 per 10 KB burst is bearable with NO fixed
charge. Useless for low data rate continuous trickle though depending on
whether this is a true packet or a charging convenience. I'd be fairly
confident that they won't continue a "free until used" service.

Beats current SMS message charges of $NZ0.20 per less data.

However, phones / modems etc are very very dear at present compared with
existing alternatives.
eg cardbus PC modem is $1299,  phone extra.
Phone to modem cable $200 (don't you just love technology)
Add on camera only costs $200!

The excessively wastrel may buy a cordless Bluetooth earpiece/mic for $470 !
Presumably this doesn't include the cost of the $450 Bluetooth phone
adaptor.
