take a look at www.eio.com
the hd44780 is on the back of the lcd.
most cheap lcd controllers (i think made by seiko) are hd44780 compatible.

I am new to the PIC hobby, at least in my case it's a hobby. My first
"big"
project requires a Hitachi HD44780 16*2 or 16 * 1 LCD display. Where in
the
U.S. can I get this at surplus prices if possible. Is the HD44780 a
controller with the LCD attached or is it separate?
