The (; emoticon can be viewed as several different things. 1) it is a
left eyed wink. 2) it is accounting for a downwards slant of the eye,
rather than an upwards one, and 3) it prevents messenger programs
from replacing it with their own brand of emoticon on both ends by
not matching their replacement patterns.
