Just out of idle curiousity - are you aware of ZBD Displays, a UK company that's an spin-off from QinetiQ?

They've developed some LCDs based on zenith bistable technology that apparently retain the image without power, and have high contrast and resolution (although I don't know what real world numbers they attach to 'high').

If you're at all interested, I can send you a .pdf of an article about them that appeared in the internal QinetiQ magazine a couple of months back.
