There are a range of controller chips from Toshiba that handle
SmartMedia and/or SD memory cards from this link:

Had a quick look but I'm not sure how much of the work they do for
you. Pretty large packages too, but could be worth it if they provide
a higher level interface and reduce the complexity/size of the
resources required in your micro.

From what I know so far SD (secure digital) is a new variant of the
MMC (multi media card) format. Both are way different to SmartMedia.
SmartMedia looks like the best of the buch to me, (size, price, low
pin count, well defined & supported standard) but also seems to be
the more complex to interface.
