I would use the Edit Plus 2, definitely the easiest editor.  They even
have syntax highligting file for the 16F84 which you can add more stuff
to it.

I found the text editor named "Textpad".  I like it because it has
syntax highlight!  I looked at its help file, and it says you can
configure TextPad to compile the file in the active window.  I tried
