With the hardware UART you will need to use a MAX232 or similar level
converter.  There are lots of different approaches documented at
http://www.piclist.com/.

Hyperterminal if you must, but it really, truly does suck.  Procomm is
better...  well, almost ANYTHING is better.  Be sure to turn hardware
handshaking off in the configuration of whatever program you use, unless
you plan to use hardware handshaking.
