IDE's and macro assemblers require comparatively a small amount of development cost and support. How many PIC's do you have to sell to pay for the implementation of a good C compiler? How much does it add to the cost of a PIC to support a free C compiler. For reference, the MPC compiler has 120,000 lines of source.
