I've got a Mavica also but have not had any problems with the batteriers or
charger.  Offhand, I would suspect the charger since you have tried 2
different batteries.

The main thing to watch out for is to not let the batteries get grossly
discharged - this KILLS lion batts.  the batteries should have a mechanism
to prevent this from actual use but if you let dead packs sit around and
not get recharged, it *could* kill them perhaps.
