If the module hasn't gotten a fix, in NMEA mode, it will only print a message every 14 seconds, the format of the message is something you can look up, but there are two numbers in the middle of it that are critial: 0,0, the first number tells you if the module has a fix. A 0 means no, a 1 means yes. The second number tells you how many sats the module sees, 3 are required at minimum for a position fix, 4 are required to get altitude. It takes abotu 10 minutes at maximum after a complete power fail for the modules to give a location. If you want connect the module to your com port and start up hyperterminal, port settinsg are baud=4800, stop=1, parity=none, flow control=none, you should see a $GPS.... line every 14 seconds.
