I don't know what you mean with the serin/serout procedures, so I can't
compare it to the PIC stuff.

Yes, I will be using ASM (I'm yet to order the PICs / programmer / finish
reading my second book on electronics!).  The process you described sounds
easy enough, and the loads of RAM of the PIC16F877 should provide a neat
send/recv buffer :)  I'd still like to find out about the serin/serout
functionality, though; it would be very advantageous for my project to have
it in hardware.
