The transducers are expensive because there is a limited market. Also mounting one inadequately will immediately kill it on turn on. Also they are moderately dangerous even without the high voltage. If you want to DIY look into magnetostrictive transducers. These you can build yourself. Try Nickel ones and also ferrite.
