I have seen this sort of thing happen on the reverse route, from the list
server to me. I see someone's reply to a message but never see the original
message.

This strangeness is not confined to the PICList either. I have seen it
happen with lists on Yahoo and another University server based in the
Netherlands. I think that some links of the net just get that busy at times
that some of these transmissions time out without errors and just get lost.
