Hello, If the devices are so close then you could do as you originally suggested, and have an LED and detector close to each other. There is no better way (unless you tell us a little more about the nature of the system). My only further suggestion would be that you consider using an optoisolator. These are simply devices that contain an emitter and receiver in a single package. They provide good electrical isolation and are easy to handle and wire up. With this configuration you can almost treat the two devices as if they were physically wired together.
