Most of the baskets have a weight sensor under them. It doesn't work as
well when you try to take a huge item through there though. The other
kind I've seen is a kind of upside down U shaped bridge over a conveyor
belt. That one has problems with small objects, like magazines. Ah well,
nothing is perfect....yet :)
