The tab character means to go to the next fixed position, which may be one space or many. Replacing the tab character with a fixed number of spaces will destroy the formatting in almost every case (including PIC assembler code) But, yes, a good editor should have commands for dealing with that as well as *nix/PC issues etc. Vanilla IDE editors tend not to, so you keep one good editor around, no big deal.
