From the EE point of view the shift registers will spread
the power/heat load over much larger area, especially if the
"200 digital outputs" are driving leds etc at 10 or 20mA
each. They can have their own decoupling caps, can
be easily diagnosed and replaced when one output fails,
offer greater immunity between chips when receiving spikes
etc etc. And HEAPS cheaper. :o)
