This will dramatically decrease power consumption. There is a rumour, Microchip has intentions to become partially a sort of a "fabless" supplier, based on the Xilinx and others most advanced semiconductor 0.13-micron process technologies. This strategy allows Microchip to focus on designing new product architectures, software tools and intellectual property instead of wasting money on legacy technologies. For the first time it may convert some microcontroller lines to 0.13-micron FPGA or CPLD, using existing software. I don't know is this truth, or not, nobody knows, I think. Sounds great, cause we may get a chip with 16 bit core and a lot of free cells to be configured via ICSP as one wish. It needs to be implemented even for the only reason, Olin Lathrop seems to get fed-up with this Bank switching and 8 bit data bus. :-0) Besides, storing program code in RAM instead of Flash increases speed by many times.
