One reason that updated software is necessary is because it needs to know the size of the chip. If it's anywhere near Tait style 16F84 parallel port hardware then I highly recommend David Tait's FPP software. Runs under all DOS and Windows versions (NT/2000/and XP with a bit of driver help), is infinitely configurable, and knows about 16F87X parts.
