I think the intention here was that lack of an int osc was 'one of' the factors contributing to its obsolescense. (Since its replacement has one). I see the 16F87x in a whole other category since it has another cool feature that makes it (specifically the 16F872) my favorite PIC for now -- A/D converters! Having to add some osc components is a small inconvenience for this otherwise fine chip. And there's no replacement (that I know of) available yet.
