The constraint between using a pot and a capacitor as the rotation sense
element is that the capacitor is limited to 180 degree sense, against
typically 270 degrees for a pot.

It may be possible to make a capacitor element in a suitable form for linear
sense, but I suspect that an inductor would be better for this.
