Very nice!  Funny, this whole PIC thing started with me cause I wanted
to build an MP3 player as well, but for a car.  Also when the whole
Linux thing started.  However, the one thing that put the project on
hold was locating a PC104 or other SBC with 4-channel audio.

Maybe I'll pick your brain when I revive the project. :-)

Look at my car MP3 controller, inside there is a pc keyboard emulator
(thanks to Tony Kubek)with 16 keys Vol up/dn,Stop,Pause,Rew,FF,Next song,
Previous song,Menu,Enter,Power,and more,(thanks to Sony),IR receiver (Thanks
to Microchip), and of course a 20x4 LCD display (thanks to the Taiwanese),
case designed by me (thanks to my brother for the Perspex work)
and of course last but not least thanks to you all who gave me a hand 6
months ago...

can be connect to any pc running any OS (mine is Window$)
Lcd goes to Parallel port
IR goes to Serial port
Keyboard goes to Pc keyboard
can be powered by keyboard voltage or combined with external source.
Measurements :11x10x3cm (4.3"x3.9"x1.18")
