Both the JDM and the El Cheapo are sensitive the characteristics of the parallel ports which are not always true. For example, the El Cheapo designer admits at (http://www.myke.com/elcheapo.htm) that it did not work with his built in ports and he had to buy an after market PCI card. The JDM also put some restriction on the RS232 port (see first paragraph at http://www.jdm.homepage.dk/newpic.htm) since it derives the power from the RS232 signals. A straight forward design such as P16PRO (http://www.picallw.com/pictures/p16pro.gif) that interfaces with the computer using standard I/O buffers is much more likely to work with all computers.
