OK, I tried but makes no difference. With CKE=1,CKP=1 it just doesn't work. I have also tried a different mode (CKE=0,CKP=0) using a PLD to adapt the signals between the SPI master and the PIC, and that one works with and without SS control (and regardless of the value I put on the RA5 bit).
