Well, the short result is that on Friday, before I saw
the Pomona option, I ordered a 3M unit from Digikey,
which should get here in a couple days.  I'll report
on it soon.

A while ago I was using SOIC  test clips an awful lot for programming
type applications -
there are 2 main ones - Pomona (Blue), which break out the SO row to a
single 0.1" row, and AP/3M (Black) which are the same length as the
chip, and use a staggered 2-row format.
ALthough the Pomona ones at first sight seem better, we found them to
be UTTER RUBBISH, as they quickly became intermittent, due to the
2-part pin arrangement, which relied on the 2 parts of each pin being
held in contact by spring pressure (I don't know if they've
subsequently changed this design).
The AP/3M ones are WAY better, and very reliable (although you
sometimes have to take a turn off the rather strong spring), and are
also much better for use on crowded PCBs. They only tended to die when
the plastic inter-pin seperators word too much.
