Here is an article about just that: http://www.gamers.com/news/1170646 I am not sure whether or not it is related to the PIC micro, however it appears that the MIT student simply intercepted the signals that were being transmitted back and forth across the board. I believe this is probably very similar to what is done with PS and PS2 modchips -- intercept signals and modify them in order to play out-of-region and/or backup games.
