Wasn't it Webster (the guy that wrote the dictionary) that tried to modify American grammer to simply all those goofy old complexifications? I can just see a bunch of old drunk Lords and Priests figuring out new and clever ways to confound the ignorant peasants, and changing rules keep the younger generations scholars humble and dependant.
