If you want to get the most accuracy out of a transistor, keeping the collector-emitter voltage constant is best. To cascode a transistor is to attach another transistor in the collector, wired common-base. In other words, transistor 2 needs a voltage reference for its base, has its emitter connected to the collector of transistor 1. Then transistor 2 does all the dirty work, but transistor 1 feels a constant collector voltage so is very fast and accurate gain-wise. Both transistors are the same polarity.
