'Standard' testing of non-pulsed IR sources such as small lasers and IR optocoupler alignment in equipment involves a CCTV camera and a monitor. Any other way is a waste of time (I am not talking about tiny reflective or transmissive off the shelf sensors). The cheapest CCD and CMOS cameras work great for this.
