Thanks to Brent and Peter. I found out that MATLAB has serial port capability. So, I think I will just write up a quick M file that does what I want, since MATLAB will run on both my present machine and the one that I will be getting. This way, I won't have the DOS compatibility that I wanted, but since it is so quick and easy to write up an M file, this is only a small disadvantage (can write a separate DOS version if needed).
