One definite standard is the pinout of the chip as defined by uChip, so - when you use a DIP housing - a DIP clip will never fail and does not take up space on the PCB :) Other than that I now often use a 2x8 pin header, because my programmer happens to have a D15M connector and D15F <==> pin header cables are abundant (from old PC game cards).
