I see what you mean.  The UIR works nicely - I've built a couple, and even
using the 12C509's internal clock it is quite reliable.  The sensor I used
seems to saturate fairly easily (at least, that is what I assume is
happening since moving further away or bouncing the signal off a wall
improves things).
