Well, honestly it would be whatever you would want, personally I prefer
the 8bit mode but it's up to you!

Definitely can...  Could even be made easier by making that pic a
serial->parallel converter.  Less wires would need to be run to the PIC
as a result.

Or if you just want it as an in-between, it would work just fine like
that too, relaying whatever you send it.

hi all

I want to improve my pc based MP3 player, so when power is up I'll have
a message on the lcd. today I need to wait for windows to boot and then
I can send massages within the autoexec.bat file. I want to put between
the parallel port and the lcd display a pic that will send messages
while windows is booting, then when windows take over it will
stop/ignored and other messages will be send by the windows os. can it
be done? electronically and software?
