Protel's demo (not sure about the final version) can lock itself out if you defrag your disk, for example. Physical dongles can be damaged, fail or get lost. I get the impression that skilled hackers can get past most any kind of protection very quickly. And, they give their work away, a terrible kind of competition under the capitalist system.
