I am not an EE too, sorry. The potentiometer (approx 100k) is connected to +5v. May be a programmable current supply will work. Its parameters should be, I think, 5v/100k=50ua to 500ua stepping 1ua of output current. This could be a DAC or even a set of resistors attached to +5v by p-n-p transistors, being controlled by PIC.
