I saw a web page ages ago with a very basic system to do this.
As it wasn't explained in electronic detail I didn't keep the page

The author passed the microphone output through a bandpass
filter tuned around 2-3kHz IIRC, then a constant-gain amplifier
(to amplify the "ff"), then integrated the sound with an RC +
comparator to get a pulse equal to the length of the word.
"ON" is shorter than "OFF", and that's what was used. It was
a basic, and any two words with different lengths would work

Option 2 is based on Spike Milligan's "Screaming Doorbell"
from the Q9 series. This had the live wire from the doorbell
attached to the nether regions of a servant standing next to
the door. So, pick yourself a lackey, make a high tension
circuit controlled by the PIC and a remote and get bossing
